Finishing a Book

January 13, 2006

There have been several books that I have not wanted to finish. Not because I got stuck, couldn’t finish or didn’t have time, but because I loved them so much I couldn’t imagine my life without them. The first time this happened to me was when I was a young pre-teen reading the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery. A friend of mine was just telling me that she had been putting off finishing the Dark Tower series for several months now because she wanted to make sure she could handle whatever ending Stephen King had decided.

For me, this feeling usually happens when I’ve read a book that I feel I’ve invested myself into. Something that takes a long time or characters I could relate to exceptionally well. Like The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, that was a book I didn’t want to finish. One because I wasn’t ready to separate myself from the characters, and two because I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy ending.

Have you ever felt this about a book or series of books? Which ones did it for you?

Yes, that has happened to me. It may sound lame, but it was Cate Tiernans Sweep Series. I still have not read the last book and we are going back about 2 or 3 years now lol. Another series which I had this happen was by LJ Smith, The Vampire Diaries. I’d reread the books over and over and wish that it would change, even though I knew it wouldn’t. Oh well, I’m a loser :P

Wow, are you going to start all over, or continue where you left off? I wouldn’t probably want to start all over. The first time I read the LOTR series, I got stuck in the Two Towers and had to start over a few years later. I’m not familiar with either of the series you mentioned, but I’ll have to check it out.
