Rosie the Headlight Fixer?

November 16, 2006

I feel like Rosie the Riveter!  I just replaced the headlight in my car and drained the water out of the working headlight.  I know that doesn’t seem like a big deal, but last time I tried to do this it took me three hours.  Since then I’ve always had someone else do it.  When I went to the dealership and learned that it would cost a whopping $84 and an hour of sitting around to do both jobs, I decided to just buy the $16 lamp.

The big deal… it took me less than an hour.  Ha!  Now I can see again while I drive at night.

I know I’ve been in a huge blogging rut. Nothing around here has been terribly interesting.  It’s not that Anthony and I haven’t been doing a ton of cool things, it’s just that I haven’t felt like blogging my life.  Partially because I don’t have digital camera (I don’t get to show off all the cool knitting stuff) right now, and partially because everything going on seems to feel negative even though its not.  Really it just stems from my hatred of classes.  I thought it wouldn’t be so bad this year, but it turns out I really am just tired of school.  I am so tired of feeling like I’m doing everything for my professors, or just because I have to jump through the hoops.  I’m so ready to be doing things for myself.  Learning things that I choose to and focusing on what is important to me.  I am so lucky that I have the students I do, otherwise I might quit all together.  I love teaching my students, and I’m looking forward to when that is more of a full time gig.
I just cleaned out 49 comments of spam that were being held in moderation.  I don’t want to fish for comments, but I could really use the encouragment right now.  Just to help get me through these last few weeks of school (or the rest of the year).

i’m so ready for school to be over for the semester as well! i just realized that i’m starting to get behind in some classes and so this weekend is going to have to be me playing catch-up… yuck!

you can make it through the next few weeks! just keep your eye on that degree and how good it will be to finally have and how much it will help you! don’t forget to take a bit of time for yourself in the midst of all the stress… it really does help. : )

:smile:Ah, you tease us with a link to your teaching information, and here we are, living in South Louisiana. Sigh.

Best advice for finishing school: Knit! Schedule it, if you must. My psychology courses taught me that you can only study for 2 hours, then everything goes into short-term memory only. Take a knitting break, you’ll feel better.

Only what, 9 days of classes left? And then finals week and then you’re done! Yay!

I know it is hard. You have so many talents and things you love to do that it’s hard to do the things you *have* to do. And the hoops are a totally pain in the butt.

When I was in grad school, I gave myself permission to not do my best in one class per term. To not worry about the work, to not get upset if I got a B, to take the time spent on stuff I didn’t care about and transfer it to something I did. It really helped a lot (although i kept having to remind myself that I didn’t have to get a good grade in that class). Try to put time aside to do the stuff you like every day.

And hey, girl, I’m very impressed that you changed the lamp.

Let’s try to have a coffee and knit fiesta when classes are over!

I’m delurking to be supportive during those last, exceptionally long and difficult weeks of the semester…I’ve been there, and know how hard it is to drag yourself across the finish line! Hang in there, you’ve got a lot of people rooting for you and we’ll be here waiting when there is more time and motivation for blogging! Make sure to be kind to yourself and give yourself some special treats for making it through…You have and will continue to earn them! Good luck…

Hang in there! I’m sorry I’m not in Eugene to come to your concert- I’d really love to hear it! You and Anthony will have to come out for dinner one night when Lauren and I are home for Christmas. :)

Having survived 4 1/2 years of grad school, and a decade later having 4 more years part-time, I really can relate to your feelings. If you can find the right environment, screaming can be helpful. (An irrational part of me is jealous though, because I always wanted to go to music school, and came within a whisker of doing it.)

I know you will get through it. You are welcome to complain here as much as you want. Well, it’s your blog, but what I meant is that we are all collectively supportive, we have all had hard times at some point or another, and we won’t be scared off if you need to complain about life. We understand.

    Good luck!

Thank you all for being so helpful. I really feel much better about tackling the next few weeks.

Barbara Kay – I always have to slip in a little shameless advertising, just in case. :) If you’re ever in Oregon…

Kim – Coffee is definitely in due order.

Jessica – Let me know when you’re going to be in town. Hopefully it’s not when Anthony and I will be in Colorado Springs.

Hi Jodie — hang in there! I think you’re doing a great job, and I’m looking forward to seeing pictures when the camera is back in working order, but enjoy reading your blog anyway.

I hear ya, sister! I don’t have a digital camera, either, and man, it makes me not want to blog. Check my history of blogging for proof!

Grad school can be quite tough because it does feel like you’re jumping through all those hoops. I hear that! A few years ago, a very wise friend of mine advised me to stop doing all the assignments- to just let some things go. Do the things i did very well, and let some of the reading pass me by. Buy the books and read them later, but don’t go crazy trying to get everything done, she told me. Some of the best advice I got for grad school.

I’m not sure it will work for your field, though.

Best of luck on holding on until a break. In the meantime, be good to yourself!
    Cheers!

KarenK – Thanks for the encouragement. Things are now getting ticked off the list, which is very satisfying.

Abby – I’ve been thinking about your comment for the past few days and am taking it to heart. I’ve given myself permission to let some of the reading go and keep focused on the big important stuff. Thanks!

I remember that feeling quite well. You can do it! I know it’s hard but the rewards at the end will hopefully make it all worth it. Hang in there!

Things are feeling slightly more managable now. After this coming week, I’ll be golden.
